Causes, Symptoms, Risk Factors, Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deep Vein Thrombosis is a medical condition in which a blood clot, known as a thrombus, forms in a deep vein<strong>.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It most commonly develops in the deep veins of the lower leg, thigh or pelvis, although it can also occur in other parts of the body, including the arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DVT is one form of venous thromboembolism (VTE). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other major form is pulmonary embolism (PE). A pulmonary embolism can occur when part of a deep-vein clot breaks away, travels through the bloodstream and becomes lodged in an artery in the lungs. Therefore, recognizing and managing DVT promptly is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people with DVT experience noticeable leg pain and swelling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, DVT does not always cause obvious symptoms. DVT develops when conditions favor abnormal clot formation inside a deep vein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinicians commonly understand DVT formation through Virchow\u2019s triad, which describes three major processes that promote thrombosis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Venous stasis: slow blood flow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When blood moves too slowly through a vein, it becomes more likely to clot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calf muscles normally act like a natural pump. When you walk or move your legs, muscle contractions help push venous blood upward toward the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this mechanism becomes less effective during prolonged immobility. Such changes can activate the body\u2019s clotting mechanisms and contribute to thrombus formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Therefore, healthcare professionals cannot diagnose DVT reliably from symptoms alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diagnosis typically combines clinical assessment, medical history, risk evaluation, blood testing and imaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. D-dimer blood test<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D-dimer is a substance associated with the breakdown of blood clots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A D-dimer test can form part of a diagnostic pathway, particularly when the clinical probability of DVT is relatively low. However, an elevated D-dimer does not automatically mean that a patient has DVT, because levels can rise for several other reasons. Therefore, clinicians interpret the result alongside the patient\u2019s clinical probability and other findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Compression ultrasonography<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compression ultrasound is a key imaging test used to investigate suspected DVT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultrasound uses sound waves to examine the deep veins and evaluate whether they compress normally. A vein containing a thrombus may not compress as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. Additional imaging<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When ultrasound does not provide a clear answer or when the suspected clot is located in an area that is difficult to evaluate, additional imaging may sometimes be necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, magnetic resonance venography may be considered in selected circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is DVT Treated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goals of treatment are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>prevent the existing clot from becoming larger,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>prevent additional blood clots, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce longer-term complications.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treatment depends on the location and extent of the clot, the patient\u2019s symptoms, bleeding risk, medical history and other clinical factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anticoagulant medicines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anticoagulants are a central treatment for many patients with DVT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often called \u201cblood thinners,\u201d anticoagulants do not simply dissolve a clot immediately. Instead, they reduce the blood\u2019s ability to form or extend clots, allowing the body\u2019s natural processes to gradually deal with the existing thrombus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Options can include heparin, warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), depending on the individual patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The duration of anticoagulation varies. Some patients may need treatment for several months, while others may require longer therapy depending on why the DVT occurred and their risk of recurrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because anticoagulants can increase bleeding risk, patients should take them only as prescribed and remain under appropriate medical supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thrombolytic therapy and procedures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In selected severe cases, clinicians may consider therapies intended to break down or remove a clot more rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, these approaches are not suitable for every patient because they can carry significant bleeding and procedural risks. Mechanical DVT prophylaxis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For appropriately selected patients, healthcare professionals may use mechanical methods to support venous circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One important approach is intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinical guidelines recognize pneumatic compression devices as one of the mechanical options used for VTE prophylaxis in selected hospitalized and surgical patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is a DVT Pump?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A DVT pump, commonly referring to an intermittent pneumatic compression system, is a medical device used as part of mechanical prophylaxis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system generally consists of a pneumatic pump connected to compression sleeves or cuffs placed around the patient\u2019s limbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During operation, the system periodically inflates and deflates the sleeves.
